Novato, CA-October 3, 2006: Catalyst Systems, LLC, a healthcare consulting company specializing in precision staffing and care delivery systems, announced its participation and leadership role in an important nursing study sponsored by the Palm Healthcare Foundation. The study focuses on the factors that contribute to a positive professional work environment in Palm Beach County, Florida. Nurses from hospitals and healthcare organizations across Palm Beach County are participate by completing a confidential survey about individual, employment, and community factors that influence perceptions of the work environment, organizational commitment, and satisfaction with work.
“In light of the nationwide nursing shortage and the recruitment and retention challenges facing healthcare today, we wanted to hear directly from the nurses in Palm Beach County to learn exactly what makes for a positive work environment.” says Catalyst founder and CEO, Holly De Groot, PhD, RN, FAAN. Dr. De Groot, Principal Investigator on the Study, is also affiliated with the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. “There are a number of factors that have contributed to today’s recruitment and retention realities, and there are important financial and emotional costs associated with staff turnover. These realities and costs affect nursing’s work environment, patient safety, and outcomes in ways that are not well understood.” She noted that local socio-economic factors such as housing costs may also play a role in cyclical nursing shortages.
The timeline for study data collection is October-November, 2006. A full report on the study results will be released to the press and the nursing community in 2007.
